Shopping Merchant Center Setup
What AdGradr checks
Section titled “What AdGradr checks”AdGradr evaluates your merchant center configuration and its dependency risk. Having no merchant center connected is the most significant finding. Relying on a Google Merchant Center (GMC) feed import is a moderate flag due to the dependency risk. An independent Microsoft Merchant Center (MMC) setup passes this check.
Why this matters
Section titled “Why this matters”Microsoft Shopping campaigns can pull product data from two sources: Google Merchant Center (via automatic import) or a standalone Microsoft Merchant Center store. Most advertisers choose GMC import because it is faster to set up. That convenience creates a dependency: if Google suspends your GMC account, your Bing Shopping campaigns die too.
GMC suspensions are not rare. Google’s automated review process flags accounts for policy violations, feed errors, or even false positives. When that happens, your Microsoft Shopping revenue goes to zero alongside your Google Shopping revenue, even though Microsoft never had a problem with your account.
What good looks like
Section titled “What good looks like”- Independent Microsoft Merchant Center store with its own product feed
- Feed connected directly from your ecommerce platform (Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce) or a feed management tool
- Product data verified and approved within MMC
- No dependency on Google Merchant Center for Bing Shopping to function
Common mistakes
Section titled “Common mistakes”- Using GMC import for speed and never revisiting it. The initial setup saves time, but the dependency risk compounds over the life of the account. Every day on GMC import is another day where a Google problem becomes a Microsoft problem.
- Assuming GMC import keeps data in sync automatically. Import schedules can lag. Price changes, inventory updates, and new products may take hours to propagate from GMC to MMC.
- Not having a merchant center at all. Some accounts run search campaigns on Bing but never set up Shopping. If you sell products, Shopping campaigns should be running.
How to fix it
Section titled “How to fix it”- Log into Microsoft Merchant Center and create a standalone store if one does not exist.
- Connect your product feed directly from your ecommerce platform or feed tool. Most major platforms (Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce) support MMC natively.
- Verify your domain and submit the feed for review.
- Once approved, update your Shopping campaigns to use the MMC store instead of the GMC import.
- Keep both feeds active during the transition. Only remove the GMC dependency after confirming MMC data is accurate and campaigns are serving.
When to ignore this check
Section titled “When to ignore this check”GMC integration is not wrong. It is a risk tradeoff. If your GMC account has a clean history with no suspensions, and your Shopping spend on Bing is a small fraction of total revenue, the dependency may be acceptable. AdGradr flags it for awareness, not as an automatic fail. Make the decision with full knowledge of the risk.
